Women from Disadvantaged Backgrounds

According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2022, gender gaps persist, and the COVID-19 pandemic has also slowed down progress toward closing the gender gap. Although Indonesia has reached near parity and women out-perform men on some indicators (health and education), overall Indonesian women still have very low representation at senior levels in the workforce, politically, and in senior decision-making positions.

Women in Indonesia face challenges of double or triple burdens in balancing work with domestic and other family work responsibilities while at the same time managing religious, cultural, and traditional expectations about their role as women and their participation and agency, particularly in the workplace and society. Based on this understanding of how specific vulnerabilities can result in entrenched marginalisation for women and using intersectionality lense, Australia Awards in Indonesia will prioritise women as head of household, women with caregiving responsibilities, women with disability, women from disadvantaged regions, and women from customary/traditional communities (perempuan masyarakat adat), and other groups of women who are disadvantaged because of their gender and socioeconomic status. The program will support affirmative outreach and interventions to these groups of women to support their access and participation in the program.
