The research looks at the business models of three leading alternative online media in Australia — New Mathilda, Crikey and The Conversation — and their strategies to ensure the sustainability of their operation. The goal is to see whether their strategies are applicable in the Indonesian contexts. The research gathers data from interviews with media owners, academics and practitioners in Australia and Indonesia to determine the applicability of these strategies. The thesis sheds some light on the delicate process of finding sustainable business models for alternative online media in Indonesia. By adopting the strategies of leading alternative online publications in Australia, and avoiding their mistakes, their Indonesian counterparts may sustainably maintain their operations for years despite the domination of mainstream media.
