Developing Integrated Immunisation and Surveillance Program Evaluation Tools in Nusa Tenggara Timur

Project Objective :
- To support the Kupang City Health Office in developing integrated evaluation tools for the measles immunisation and surveillance programs;
- To conduct refresher training for Immunisation Officers and Measles Surveillance Officers from all health centers and hospitals in Kupang City, Nusa Tenggara Timur; and
- To use a collaborative approach to problem identification through roundtable discussions aimed at improving procedures and practice for eliminating measles in Kupang City, Nusa Tenggara Timur.
Project Description:
The project will provide assistance to Health Department officers in listing the targeted parties to be involved, identification of the measles program components and improving the existing evaluation tools. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews (IDIs) will be conducted with health centre officers in order to involve them and trigger their sense of belonging in the evaluation program while at the same time identifying their understanding and experience relating to the immunisation and surveillance program. Instead of using a top-down approach, this project takes a bottom-up approach that could be scaled-up to other district health offices in Nusa Tenggara Timur.
The project will build teamwork skills by conducting refresher training with immunisation officers and surveillance officers at health centres and hospitals level. The participants will receive similar information about the measles immunisation and surveillance program. They will have a field visit to the selected health centres and hospital. Roundtable discussions including our collaborator from UNSW Australia will finalise evaluation tools, inputs from stakeholders, local experts and scholars, as well as for commitment establishing. Dr Heywood has expertise and research experience in immunisation program evaluation, including measles elimination. Dr Pardosi will support the team in regard to the initial data collection and assist us for community engagement with his research background and knowledge in Nusa Tenggara Timur.

Relevant Facts:
Six (6) measles cases occurred in 2012; 40 cases in 2015; reaching a peak in 2016 at total cases of 185 in Kupang.
