Project Objective :

  • To help 14,728 farmers, 260 local livestock traders and 12 local slaughtermen (15,000 total) in Sinjai Regency to sell their livestock at a proper price;
  • To decrease the slaughter of productive cows in Sinjai Regency;
  • To deliver information about livestock management and health controls to 14,728 farmers, 260 local livestock traders and 12 local slaughtermen in Sinjai Regency; and
  • To make an early warning system for the public, 14,728 farmers and 260 local livestock traders and 12 local slaughtermen in Sinjai regency about the presence of contagious animal diseases or zoonotic diseases.

Project Description:

ICLS will receive a SMS from farmers who will sell their livestock. ICLS then sends a SMS widely to all farmers, breeders and livestock traders in the area of Sinjai Regency. This will give farmers a better chance of getting a proper price because there are more buyers for their livestock. In addition, this project will encourage farmers to sell their livestock in auction systems.

ICLS will monitor the trade of productive cows. Information about sales of productive cows will be directly sent to breeder farmers or breeder enterprises that will buy the cows at a higher price than slaughtermen. In addition, the ICLS can stop the information about sales of productive cows going to slaughtermen.

ICLS will send continuing and complete livestock management information to about 14,728 farmers and 260 local livestock traders and 12 local slaughtermen via SMS broadcast. This system will make sure that information is obtained by all farmers, in an easy and inexpensive way that does not interrupt farmers’ activities.

ICLS will send a broadcast SMS to farmers and traders in a specific area to alert them to the presence of contagious animal diseases or zoonotic diseases in the area to prevent the disease spreading to other areas.

Relevant Facts:

Indonesia is one of the countries where the agriculture sector can be considered to be a main national income resource. The agriculture development has been a main focus of the national development programs. In 2009, agricultural sector contributed as much as 15.3% to the National GDP. As a result of the intensification and commercialization of animal food production, however it has been created several consequences for public health concern.

The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) through the Directorate General of Livestock Services (DGLS) is responsible for controlling livestock production including animal health and quality of livestock products. The regulations based on Animal Health and Animal Husbandry Law no.18, 2009 which stipulated the authority to control animal health and livestock production, including veterinary public health.
