Project Objective :

To seed a bilateral partnership between Neliti (from Indonesia) and Scistream, Inc (from Australia) to develop an online, bilingual tool to digitise Indonesian research publications from 1,000 libraries across the archipelago.

Project Description:

This funding will seed a bilateral collaboration between Neliti (from Indonesia) and Scistream Inc. (from Australia) - both nonprofit developers of library technologies - to provide technology and training to digitalise 1,000 Indonesian libraries - making millions of Indonesian publications freely available to both Indonesian and Australian educational institutions.

Indonesian libraries would be trained to digitise their publications and the publications disseminated freely to Australian and Indonesian higher education institutions via the online platform, social media, and email communication. The project aims to digitalise at least one library from each of the Alumni Grant Scheme's 7 geographic focus areas of Aceh, Maluku, Maluku Utara, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Papua and Papua Barat; and at least one library from institutions that perform research focusing on each of the following marginalised groups: people living in poor and remote communities, women, people with disabilities, children or youth, indigenous people, and people living with HIV/AIDS.

The project will be implemented in three phases:

  • Development of an online, bilingual tool to digitalise Indonesian research publications;
  • Training Indonesian libraries from universities, government bodies and research institutes to digitalise their publications via an online video tutorial, 20 on-site workshops and three seminars across Indonesia;

Disseminating those publications freely to Australian and Indonesian higher education institutions via an online platform, social media and email communication. Through digitalising 1,000 Indonesian libraries, we hope to make approximately 14% of Indonesia's entire research output available online. This will encourage evidence-based policy in Indonesia by increasing readership of Indonesian knowledge by policymakers.

Project Beneficiaries:

At least 1,000 librarians are direct beneficiaries of this project.

Relevant Facts:

Indonesia is home to 4,000 university libraries, 1,200 public libraries and 600 government libraries which publish 7,000 academic journals and millions of research publications every year. However, currently only 28% of that research is freely available online. Even when available, it is often hidden in rarely-visited websites and difficult to find.
