Celebrating the 70 years of Australian scholarships in Indonesia, the Australian Consulate-General in Bali organised the Australian Alumni Gala Dinner on 16 June 2023. Approximately 150 Indonesian graduates who had studied at Australian universities gathered to honour the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the first group of Indonesian recipients of the Colombo Plan scholarship in Australia.
Hosted by the Australian Consul-General in Bali, Ms Anthea Griffin, this year's Bali Gala featured esteemed Australian alumna Cheryl Marella as the MC, captivating performances by OzAlum Balawan and Indra Lesmana, and a mini photo exhibition. The alumni who attended this event engaged in lively conversations and relished a delightful dinner in a beautiful outdoor setting near the beach at Museum Pasifika, Bali.
For 70 years, Australia has joined forces with Indonesia in a collaborative effort to invest in human capital development, address social and economic priorities, and foster enduring ties between the two nations. The scholarship program, recognised as the Australia Awards, is Indonesia's longest-standing foreign scholarship program.
Australia has emerged as a preferred study destination for Indonesian students, with approximately 20,000 enrollments each year. With over 200,000 alumni in Indonesia, including influential government and business leaders, these individuals are pivotal in strengthening cooperation between Australia and Indonesia, driving mutual security and prosperity forward.
